Interview: The Vampire Diaries’ Steven R. McQueen On What’s Coming For Jeremy In Season 4

As some other characters from The Vampire Diaries have gone through major changes like becoming vampires or witches, Steven R. McQueen‘s Jeremy Gilbert has had quite a bit of growth of his own, going from being the annoying, drug-abusing little brother and, after some great tragedies, he has really come into his own as a character, including having the ability to see dead people.

We spoke with Mr. McQueen at the Vampire Diaries press room of this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego about what might be coming up for Elena’s favorite brother.

Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries will start with more tragedy for Jeremy as, following the events of the third season finale, Elena has died and has been reborn as a vampire. McQueen says that he thinks Jeremy will be grateful that Elena is not completely gone, but he will feel some responsibility for what will happen. And although a friend and mentor like Alaric is also recently gone from his life, Jeremy might be meeting some new characters as the new season comes in. “There are a couple new characters. In the first episode, second episode… they come in, and they come in strong,” he teases.

As for Jeremy’s current state, McQueen acknowledges that Jeremy has “always been the guy with the big heart.” “He keeps swinging, but keeps getting knocked down,” McQueen admits.

“He’s been kind of imploding, I’d say, for the last couple seasons. Self destructing. And that’s been because he’s had something to lose. Now, I feel he’s backed in a corner, and he’s going to start to explode a little more this season. Hopefully he’ll take charge and fight back a little bit,” he says, revealing that a crossbow might be in Jeremy’s future. “There are certain promo pictures [we took] and the crossbow was present. I don’t know if those are pictures that they’re going to end up using, but I’m hoping so,” he says.

This might be the start of some new responsibility for Jeremy, especially now that he is the man of the Gilbert house. “I think he’s been trying to assume that role, and he’s been too weak, and felt powerless at times, to keep the people he loved safe, and it’ll be interesting, now that he’s got nothing left to use and he’s like an animal backed into a corner, to see how he’s going to lash out,” McQueen says.
