New Supernatural Showrunner Jeremy Carver Talks Season 8 & Beyond

Sometimes you can go home again.

Jeremy Carver departed The CW’s Supernatural, where he was a writer and producer, after the fifth season, and now, he returns to the popular show as the showrunner starting with Season 8 in October. In the time in between, Carver developed the North American version of Being Human for Syfy with his wife, Anna Fricke. We caught up with Mr. Carver in the Supernatural press room at Comic-Con to find out a little bit about what his plans are, and what it was like to return to the show.

Please do not reproduce this onto other websites/Tumblr pages/etc. Instead, just place a link to KSiteTV! Thanks!

“At the heart, it was very flattering,” he says about returning to Supernatural as showrunner. “I said something on the panel, it’s sort of like being a camper and then being asked back to be a counselor. I definitely left Being Human with mixed feelings, because I really, really love that show, and I was working very closely with my wife for the last couple of years, so that was a really special experience, and I feel great ties to that show. But likewise, with Supernatural… Supernatural is such an incredible thing at this point. It was a real honor to be asked.”

“When the boys start out the season, they’re very much in the want of something that has very deep ties to the early mythology of the show, and so when we say ‘this time it’s personal,’ we mean it,” he teases. Might that return to early mythology have anything to do with John Winchester, Sam and Dean’s father? “On this show, I think there’s always a possibility of anything. That’s as far as I would go with that right now,” he says.

Carver is also reluctant to put a number on the amount of time Sam and Dean are separated at the start of the season – the show ended Season 7 with Dean in Purgatory. “I call it ‘a significant amount of time’,” he says. “Enough time that each one of these guys has gone through fairly life-altering events, but I don’t think it’s a secret, nor should it be, that they do find a way back together.”

Jeremy Carver also wanted to be sure to clarify a comment he had made about “dropping the mythology.” “When I was saying we were dropping the mythology a little bit more sparingly this season, that was notwithstanding the fact that I think we really are building some foundations for a storyline that can carry us on for at least a few more years. There’s a note card in my office with ‘the end of Season 10’ right there, where I think this mythology can take us,” he says, clarifying that that note card “exists in a fantasy right now.”

“I don’t know if there’s going to be a Season 10, but that’s the one that keeps me getting up in the morning. I think the challenge of the actors – these guys have played their roles every which way, right? You want to give them challenging, human, fun scenes. You want to write parts that every actor would love to play, and hopefully that goes for the leads as well as the guest roles that are coming in,” he says.

What do you say? Would you like Supernatural to go on for ten seasons? Leave some comments below or come by our Supernatural forum! Supernatural Season 8 starts Wednesday, October 3 on The CW.

Seeing this, that season 8 is already slated has made my day. Now on the fact of a season 10…. I can only hope and wish the series continues to that point and beyond. I know every show has gotta end, but this is one that will be hard to let go. Thank god Carver is back!

I know it’s impractical to say the least, but I hope Supernatural continues way, way beyond season 10. Every single season of this show had something new to offer-something related to the earlier seasons in some way. Season 7 might have failed to meet some of our expectations, but it still gave fans an hour of the day to really look forward to. Some episodes were quite funny, actually. Anyway, I think season 8 should have elements similar to those of season 6-excitement, misunderstandings(like Cas’ betrayal or the whole thing with Sam’s soul)…Whatever the main theme of the season is, its the relationship between the characters that fans ultimately enjoy watching- although bringing the angels and demons plot back would be a smart move.

Now that I know for sure that Supernatural will continue another year I am extremely thrilled. I can’t wait to sit down and see what happens next and I hope that they continue well past season 10. Supernautral is the one show that never gets bad and I don’t feel like I want to leave the room after a while because I am getting borred. You can’t gegt bored while Supernatural is on the screen because it is the perfect show. I’ve been hooked since the first episode I saw.
