ABC has announced that they’ll be reviving classic sitcom Roseanne for an eight-episode run, which will premiere in 2018.
“The Conners’ joys and struggles are as relevant – and hilarious – today as they were then, and there’s really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment.
Roseanne aired from 1988 to 1997 on ABC and garnered strong reviews for its portrayal of a lower-income Midwestern family struggling to make financial ends meet. The series, which also addressed social issues through the lens of its protagonist, spent its first six seasons in the Nielsen top 5 and earned co-star Laurie Metcalf three Emmys for her role as neurotic, directionless Jackie Harris.
Going into next season, Roseanne will be ABC’s lone multi-camera comedy after the network opted to cancel Last Man Standing and Dr. Ken. Carol Burnett multi-cam Household Name is said to still be in contention for a midseason run, but if it doesn’t get picked up, Roseanne will likely have to air with one of Splitting Up Together or Alex, Inc., the two comedies ABC left off its fall schedule.
