FOX has opted to not go forward with troubled supernatural drama Sleepy Hollow, cancelling the series after four seasons. Sleepy Hollow was a breakout critical and ratings hit in its first season, with praise going toward the unorthodox storytelling and chemistry between leads Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie, but the show hit the creative skids in its second season, Beharie left at the end of season three, and an abbreviated fourth season followed. Surprisingly, with the show shifting from more serialized to more procedural, this season didn’t have as many episodes and left the show a ways from syndication numbers.
Based on the 1820 short story by Washington Irving, Sleepy Hollow followed Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), who awakens in 2013 to discover that the Headless Horseman is alive and terrorizing the town he loves once again. He then teams up with Lt. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) and learns that the two are Witnesses charged with keeping the world from being enveloped by demons.
In addition to Beharie and Mison, Sleepy Hollow starred Lyndie Greenwood (Nikita), John Noble (Fringe), Janina Gavankar (The Mysteries of Laura), Orlando Jones (American Gods), and Jeremy Davies (Justified).
The series finale of Sleepy Hollow aired earlier this year on FOX. The network will be unveiling its plans for this coming fall on Monday, May 15th.
