CBS has opted to part ways with freshman cop drama Training Day, cancelling the series after a lone 13-episode season. Though the series wasn’t in the best position after debuting to soft ratings and underwhelming critical reception, Training Day‘s chances for a second season were sealed following the untimely death of star Bill Paxton, who passed in late February following complications from surgery. CBS pressed on but soon shifted the series to Saturdays to burn off the remaining episodes.
Based on the 2001 Denzel Washington film, for which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and adapted for television by Will Beall (Gangster Squad), Training Day followed Officer Kyle Craig (Justin Cornwell) as he partnered with morally ambiguous Detective Frank Roarke (Bill Paxton) while undercover investigating the LAPD Special Investigation Section. As Roarke’s record has attracted the attention of his superior officers, it’s Craig’s mission to procure the evidence necessary to put his partner away for good.
In addition to Paxton and Cornwell, Training Day starred Julie Benz (Defiance), Katrina Law (Spartacus), Drew Van Acker (Devious Maids), and Christina Vidal (Taina).
The series finale of Training Day airs later this month on CBS. The network is set to reveal its plans for fall 2017 on Wednesday, May 17th.
