Analyzing the 2018 Fall Schedule: FOX

CRAIG: 8:00 The Mick; 8:30 Dan the Weatherman; 9:00 9-1-1
SHILO: 8:00 Lethal Weapon; 9:00 The Gifted
ACTUAL SCHEDULE: 8:00 The Gifted; 9:00 Lethal Weapon

CRAIG: I love The Gifted but I’m surprised by the considerable lack of buzz it has, being an X-Men TV show. What kind of push will they have to have to make a splash? And is it really going to be okay against Roseanne, The Voice and The Flash, even though The Flash is clearly not the show it used to be? Then, at 9, Lethal Weapon without Clayne Crawford. It’ll probably get a huge premiere to see how they pulled it off in a “Kevin Can Wait killed Erinn Hayes” sort of way, but then remember Kevin isn’t back for Season 3. They have their work cut out for them. What do I know, though? I’m just bitter Lucifer is gone.

SHILO: This seems like a lineup that will turn into a disaster in a hurry. The Gifted at least gets to return in the fall, but its first season was still modestly rated and I don’t know if it has the audience to withstand an almost nine-month hiatus unscathed. Especially since it’ll be airing against Roseanne, The Voice, and The Flash, all of which target a family and/or comic audience that could squeeze it out. With only 13 episodes, the move to 9:00 for Lethal Weapon feels as much like putting the show out to pasture as it does with helping the affiliates and counterprogramming This Is Us. Even with Lethal getting out from under NCIS, The Gifted should be a soft lead-in, the move to get rid of Crawford could badly backfire, and new CBS drama FBI might be more direct competition for Lethal than NCIS ever was.
