MONDAY
CRAIG: 8:00 9-1-1; 9:00 Deputy
SHILO: 8:00 The Resident; 9:00 9-1-1
CRAIG: I feel like 9-1-1 is a good show to lead the night, but I also think that part of “New” FOX is to have new programming. So, I’m moving that series to 8PM and putting the David Ayer-directed Deputy starring Stephen Dorff as a man unexpectedly forced into a sheriff job at 9. Both seem to be rescue- type shows and they’d fit well together, even if one might feel closer to reality than the other. This isn’t to discount The Resident in any way; I think that would be a good pinch hitter if and when it is needed, especially with a full season of episodes.
SHILO: With all the change going on at FOX, I think this is the night they avoid tinkering with. The Resident will likely be their only returning drama capable of (and successful enough to) do 22-episode seasons and hold down the fort when 9-1-1 takes its midseason hiatus. 9-1-1 is still very strong, especially in non-linear, and likely provides the FOX 10:00 affiliates with a nice influx of viewers. Outside of maybe some necessary post-production time or extensive prep time for their stunt work, I don’t completely understand why something like 9-1-1 needs a lengthy midseason hiatus and sub-22 episode order, but FOX can use another procedural/crime drama as a bridge come January. Finally, as further evidence that FOX will keep this night together, these two shows were renewed together in March.
