100 Bullets was a comic book series from DC’s Vertigo imprint. The series featured a character named Agent Graves who gives people the chance to use a handgun to get their revenge on those who wronged them. According to Wikipedia, Graves “informs the candidate that the bullets are completely untraceable, and any law enforcement investigation that uncovers one of these bullets will immediately stop.”
The series, by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, ran for 100 issues, and throughout that time there were many revelations beyond the title’s initial conceit.
Bleeding Cool today pointed toward an interview two years ago where Azzarello told MTV “Television — there’s an idea!… That’s all I’ll say. Television… or maybe something that’s not just TV.” “Not just TV” is a mantra of the HBO cable network.
Yesterday, DC’s Geoff Johns said something a bit more to Fast Company. Here’s what he said:
“There are stories throughout the decades that work really well. There are also really great characters. For instance, there’s a character called Hourman. He’s been around for 60 years, but has never had his own series. So we develop him in house a little bit more, and then we talk to the people at Warner Television about what their take could be. Raven, who is part of the Teen Titans, is another character we’ve explored. Raven’s very well-known and loved, but she’s always been part of a team. You’ve seen Rosemary’s Baby? Picture that kid grown up. So it’s a really interesting mythology to delve into. Vertigo has a comic, 100 Bullets, which is a great story if you like crime comics, and it’s going to be a great TV show. Vertigo comics tend to create their own worlds, so we can see clearly what each story line is, and consider them for television or film.
“It’s going to be a great TV show?” Sounds like something a bit more solid than a “maybe…”
What are your thoughts? Would 100 Bullets be a good fit for TV? What about Hourman, who Johns mentioned in the Fast Company interview? Let your thoughts be known in the comments.
