Freeform has announced that its immigration-themed Party of Five reboot has been ordered to series.
“Party of Five embodies the heart and soul of what it means to be a family in the most trying of times. We’re so lucky that Freeform gets to be the home for this reimagined story, as we continue to represent the resilience of young adults and the importance of fighting for your voice in times of doubt,” Freeform president Tom Ascheim said in a statement announcing the news Monday. “We are thrilled to be able to share the groundbreaking storytelling from Amy and Chris with a new audience, and are excited for our viewers to discover the beauty of this series.”
Based on the 1994-2000 FOX family drama that starred Scott Wolf and Neve Campbell, with original series creators Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman co-writing the pilot, Party of Five follows the five children in the Acosta family as they struggle to survive in the wake of their parents’ deportation. The series will be the second recent reboot to heavily incorporate immigration, as The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico is similarly topical.
The series stars Brandon Larracuente (13 Reasons Why), Emily Tosta (The Last Ship), Niko Guardado (The Goldbergs), and Elle Paris Legaspi (To My Family).
Party of Five joins a scripted slate for Freeform that includes Grown-ish, The Bold Type, and Siren, with Pretty Little Liars spinoff The Perfectionists and buddy comedy Besties to come later this year. The network also picked family comedy Everything’s Gonna Be Okay up to series in December.
