Interview with Nina Dobrev of The CW's Vampire Diaries Vampire Diaries: Nina Dobrev Talks Season 5 Spoilers

The cast of The Vampire Diaries visited Comic-Con again this year, and while they were there, we were able to participate in a roundtable discussion with Nina Dobrev (Elena) that should contain some hints of what’s to come for TVD Season 5. Want some hints? Maybe we’ve got some… starting with where things pick up with the season premiere.

“It’s a couple of months later, so summer has come and gone,” Dobrev explains about where things start and how things will be going for the Damon and Elena relationship when things pick back up. “They had a great summer, and they’re in their honeymoon phase and they’re excited. As she goes to college, they’re going to try to make it work long-distance, and as I’m sure everyone here knows, long distance isn’t always the easiest thing. So, we’ll see. We’re still shooting the first episode. I don’t know that much,” she says.

Will that bliss continue, especially with the notion that Elena’s best friend, Bonnie, is no longer among the living? How will Elena react? “That will suck,” Nina says. “Luckily, for now, she doesn’t know, because she’s in a very happy place in her life. I think Bonnie sees that and doesn’t want to ruin it for her, because Elena barely has any happiness. But it’s not going to be a good day. It’s going to be really, really hard. It’s her best friend; it’s like family. Your friends become your family, especially in Elena’s situation,” she explains.

Elena’s doppelganger, Katherine, is now human, and she won’t be having a good time of things at all. “Crazy, and insecure, and scared, and vulnerable” is how Nina describes Katherine’s new state. “It’s a very different world for her, and she doesn’t know how to navigate it, and she can’t compel herself any more clothes,” she laments. “What is she gonna wear, guys? That is the important question. So there’s tragedy in Katherine’s world.” Does this mean we’ll see Katherine in the season premiere? “Maybe. Maybe not. We’ll have to see the premiere to see if she’s in it. I can’t tell you,” Nina teases.

That’s not the only thing that we weren’t able to learn from Nina Dobrev; she also is not aware of the kind of student Elena will end up being once she gets to college. “I ask myself the same question. What is she even majoring in? How did she get into college? I have no idea. I’m going to ask them the same question when we get back to set,” she laughs.

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 begins October 3 on The CW.
