Interview with Julie Plec about The Vampire Diaries & The Originals Interview: EP Julie Plec On TVD Cliffhangers & Romance, Originals Season 2 & Alaric’s Return

Julie Plec continues to be one of the busiest writers and producers in television, but that didn’t stop us for catching up with her at The CW’s recent party as part of the television critics’ press tour.

As Executive Producer of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, fans often watch Plec’s every word for intel on their favorite supernatural and not-so-supernatural characters.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIESHere’s what we managed to find out, with our questions in bold and her answers are not.

KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: There were several cliffhangers that the fifth season finale of The Vampire Diaries left on. Can you tease anything about the return, and what’s going to happen to Bonnie and Damon on the other side?

THE ORIGINALS & VAMPIRE DIARIES EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JULIE PLEC: Well, I think the big question of the return is two-fold: One is “what happened to Bonnie and Damon? Where are they? Are they living? Are they dead? Can they get back? Are they stuck? How are they going to entertain each other, those two who never really had much of a bond? And how long are they going to be gone?” So part of what we’re doing in the beginning is playing that mystery and answering those questions one piece at a time, peeling back the layers of all those answers over the first run of episodes.

HomeQuestion from Twitter: Is there hope for any love for Caroline coming up?

There’s always hope for love for Caroline. It’s always just a question of “is she being loved, or loving the right person?”

Is there a chance she might be reunited with Klaus at any point this season?

We don’t have anything in the books right now, but we talk about it all the time.

A Closer Walk with TheeWhat can you tell me about The Originals Season 2? You’ve already shot a few episodes, right?

We’ve shot three, and I just saw the Comic-Con cut down for the trailer we’re showing, and it’s so damn good. It’s like a movie; it’s like a feature film. Basically, The Originals this year, we’re approaching it from less of a turf war Mafia tone and more of a fable/Grimm Fairy Tale kind of tone. You have the wicked witch of a mother who’s come back; you have the vampire hunter of a father who’s come back. You’ve got this family warring, trying to hold on to their home against the evil sorceress and the terrible beasts, and all of the fun that we can have with that.

It’s about revenge and the attempt to clean up their home so that they can bring their child back, only to realize that their greatest enemies are actually their own family.

The Last DayAnd speaking of having people back: How cool is it to have Alaric (Matt Davis) back?

There’s nothing cooler!

Is that something you had wanted to do for a while?

That was something I didn’t think we’d ever be able to credibly do, but would have done instantly if I could. It was when the opportunity came up for it to be a credible resurrection, and I asked Matt Davis. I said “look, I don’t know what you want to do with yourself right now, but we sure would like to have you back,” and he said “I miss you guys. I miss my family. I’d be happy to.” Best day. Best day of the whole year.
