USA Network has set a Tuesday, September 4th premiere date for its upcoming series adaptation of horror film franchise The Purge. The series, which will air at 10:00, will have its premiere and finale simulcast on Syfy.
Developed for television by franchise creator James DeMonaco, The Purge follows Miguel (Gabriel Chavarria), a hard-edged Marine who returns to town on Purge Night after receiving a cryptic letter from his sister. The series follows Gabriel as he tries to protect his family during The Purge, a 12-hour period where all crime is legal, while navigating the small city they live in and surprising himself with how far he’ll go to stay alive.
In addition to Chavarria, The Purge cast includes Jessica Garza (Six) as Penelope, a member of a Purge-worshipping cult who gets quite an eyeopener when she’s exposed to gruesomeness she could’ve never imagined; Amanda Warren (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) as financial professional Jane, who hires a Purge assassin to make headway at her company; and Colin Woodell (The Originals) as Rick, a man whose usage of the pro-Purge elite to climb the social ladder causes a rift with his wife.
The Purge joins a scripted slate for USA Network that includes Queen of the South, Shooter, and Mr. Robot. Its premiere comes only a couple months after the latest film in the franchise, which has grossed over $300 million against a $22 million budget, hits theaters.
