FOX has given its first series order for the 2018-2019 season to thriller The Passage, a series that had been in development last year before being redeveloped this year.
Based on the best-selling trilogy from Justin Cronin and developed for television by Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights), The Passage focuses on 10-year-old Amy (Saniyya Sidney), set to be a test subject in a secret government experiment centered around a dangerous virus. The series follows her relationship with federal agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), the man who would be her surrogate father and ultimate protector.
In addition to Sidney and Gosselaar, The Passage stars Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), Brianne Howey (The Exorcist), Jamie McShane (Bloodline), Caroline Chikezie (The Shannara Chronicles), and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage).
FOX has a very strong season in 2017-2018 when it came to new dramas, as the network renewed all four of The Gifted, The Orville, 9-1-1, and The Resident. Given the impending Disney merger and FOX’s subsequent deemphasizing of scripted content, it remains to be seen how many other new dramas will join The Passage next year.
