Syfy has announced that acclaimed fantasy drama The Magicians has been renewed for a 13-episode third season, which should premiere sometime next year.

Based on the Lev Grossman novel series and adapted for television by Sera Gamble (Supernatural) and John McNamara (Aquarius), The Magicians tells the story of Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), a seemingly normal twenty-something who finds himself accepted at prestigious Brakebills University, a school for magic. Faced with everything he loved and dreamed about in childhood being real, Quentin sets about becoming a master magician while forming relationships with those like him. The second season has focused on Quentin dealing with the loss of significant other Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), who became consumed by her power in a battle with The Beast, while Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Summer Bishil) are forced to grow up when thrust into power in Fillory and Julia attempts to exact revenge on the being that violated her.

Part of Syfy’s rebrand that resets their drama brand toward more serious science fiction, The Magicians joins a drama slate that includes 12 Monkeys, The Expanse, Dark Matter, Killjoys, Wynonna Earp, and Channel Zero.

One of very few cable dramas to increase its ratings season to season, The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9:00 on Syfy. You can check out photos and a sneak peak of the penultimate episode of season two here.
