Quentin went into the underworld with the intention of helping his best friend regain the lost part of herself. He was more than willing to give up the button to Fillory if it meant that the emptiness that Julia was dealing with would be no more; Quentin would have wanted to help her regardless of circumstances, but knowing how much Julia had been through recently furthered his motivation to help her. However, instead of walking out of the underworld with a newly whole best friend, Quentin now has Alice’s shade, the missing element in his numerous attempts to bring her back to human form. Julia gave up her shot at happiness and fulfillment in order to give him another chance to be with Alice. Considering the immense sacrifice, Quentin cannot accept any more failure when it comes to rescuing Alice from life as a niffin, but will he have enough magic to bring her back to human form?
On the next episode of The Magicians, Quentin and Julia pay Professor Mayakovsky a visit looking for assistance in saving Alice. Though the math checks out that her missing shade was the reason his attempts at getting through to her fell through, Quentin needs someone with Mayakovsky’s experience and power to help ensure that the spell works the way it’s supposed to. Choosing Mayakovsky specifically is also Quentin’s way of getting justice for his (currently) lost love, given the professor’s involvement in the affair that led Charlie to become a niffin and Alice to come to Brakebills in the first place, but he gets the added benefit that Mayakovsky’s magical stockpile should be more than enough to power the spell to bring Alice back to the land of the living. Yet even with Quentin’s intentions as good as they are, even if the spell is able to be successful with Mayakovsky’s magic and Julia’s support, what happens if Alice doesn’t want to be human again?
Elsewhere on The Magicians, Eliot learns a disturbing truth about Fillory that changes the way he looks at his kingdom, while Kady and Penny make a sacrifice necessary to face Reynard and Margo heads to the land of the fairies to try and fix the deal she made with the ambassador.
The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9:00 on Syfy.
Will Quentin be able to convince Mayakovsky to use his magical stockpile to save Alice? Could the truth about Fillory have to do with the impending elections that Josh suggested? Do you think John will be an asset for Kady and Penny or is his interest in bringing down his father not as genuine as it seems?
