Hulu has announced that Emmy winner Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) will star in upcoming drama The Looming Tower, which was picked up straight to series this past September.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning exposé by Lawrence Wright, and adapted for television by Oscar nominee Dan Futterman (Foxcatcher), The Looming Tower traces the rise of Osama Bin Laden and how a rivalry between the FBI and CIA may have inadvertently set the stage for 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Daniels will be playing John O’Neill, the bull-headed chief of the New York FBI’s Counter-Terrorism unit whose suspicion that the United States has been targeted by Al Qaeda receives pushback from other wings of the federal government.
The Looming Tower marks only the second series regular television role for Jeff Daniels following The Newsroom. His movie credits range from Dumb & Dumber to The Martian and The Squid and the Whale. He joins a cast that includes Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire).
With The Looming Tower making strides in its casting, the series joins a drama slate on Hulu that includes The Path, Chance, Shut Eye, and upcoming Castle Rock, a psychological thriller based on the collective works of Stephen King. Premiere dates/time frames for both The Looming Tower and Castle Rock have yet to be revealed.
