ABC has announced that medical drama The Good Doctor has had its initial 13-episode order extended to a full season of 18 installments.
“We are thrilled to announce that we are giving our viewers additional episodes of The Good Doctor,” said Channing Dungey, President, ABC Entertainment. “We have an amazing team in front of and behind the camera, led by Freddie Highmore’s incredibly nuanced performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, and we’re confident the show will continue to captivate our audience.”
From David Shore (House), The Good Doctor follows Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who relocates to join the prestigious surgical department at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. The series, the first ABC newbie to get an extension this season and second overall to Young Sheldon, has been extremely impressive out of the gate, significantly building on its Dancing with the Stars lead-in, holding its premiere rating in week two, and garnering the second largest absolute L+3 gain for a broadcast series premiere ever.
In addition to Highmore, The Good Doctor stars Antonia Thomas (Misfits), Nicholas Gonzalez (Sleepy Hollow), Beau Garrett (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce), Hill Harper (CSI: NY), and Richard Schiff (The West Wing).
The Good Doctor airs Mondays at 10:00 on ABC.
