Tonight at 10PM ET/PT, ABC is premiering The Good Doctor in which Bates Motel’s Freddie Highmore plays a unique individual who, instead of taking lives as Norman Bates did, saves lives as, well, a good doctor.

“It’s nice to save people after years of killing them,” Highmore laughed at this summer’s Television Critics Association press tour panel for the show. “It was probably my comeuppance. I had it coming for me.”

“I think what drew me to this show was, first of all, the conversation with David [Shore] that I had about his script, which was just so brilliant. And it actually came around three days or something after Bates Motel had finished, so it was quite the quick turnaround,” he explained.

“David’s writing is wonderful. There’s a subtleness to it, a lightness to it. But, at the same time, it manages to delve into those deeper issues without being melodramatic. It’s never sort of forced and over the top,” the actor continued.
