ABC has renewed its Goldbergs-verse, it was confirmed today, as The Goldbergs and spinoff Schooled will be coming back in 2019-2020.
The news comes as no surprise for either, as both have been especially solid performers for ABC. The renewals only come as late as they are because of intense negotiations between series producer Sony and the network, a by-product of this era of vertical integration and networks seeking to own bigger pieces of outside productions.
The Goldbergs ranks as the number three comedy on ABC behind Modern Family, which is headed into a final season, and limited series The Conners, which makes it that much more valuable to the network. It had a healthy drop in the ratings this season and continues to foster a syndication presence that should keep its numbers sturdy for the foreseeable future.
Having been redeveloped for a midseason debut this season, Schooled has been a good retainer of its Goldbergs lead-in and always responds well to when the two shows crossover. It ranks as ABC’s number four comedy overall and either its number one or number two new comedy depending on how you count The Conners.
With the renewals of The Goldbergs and Schooled, ABC’s lone pending renewal decision is Whiskey Cavalier, which could be in limbo until after upfronts.
