Despite some early bumps in her freelance career, Jane has slowly been pulling herself out of the funk she was in. She’s sold some pieces, gotten her profile of Ben published, and seemed to weather not having the stability of Scarlet to lean on. It’s not exactly where she wants to be in her career, having to constantly hustle and not have the luxury of latching back with the Scarlet machine behind her, but she finally has a sense of direction again, as well as the feeling that it’s all going to be alright.
On the next episode of The Bold Type, Jane’s positive momentum gains steam with a Mandy Award nomination for her article on sexual assault. This is the type of prestige that Jane had been chasing and the fact that it comes for something that was not only timely but important makes it all the sweeter. She got into writing to do work like “Carry the Weight,” so this is a sign that she’s going in the right direction and that the effort she’s putting into her writing hasn’t been in vain. However, the award nomination puts her back into Jacqueline’s orbit for the first time since she was denied re-entry back at Scarlet, which makes what should be a celebratory victory lap just a bit more awkward. Especially since Jacqueline’s story ties back into a “Carry the Weight” follow-up article Jane’s writing in a way that is real but could ultimately prove devastating. As much as Jane respects and admires Jacqueline, and as grateful as she is for the opportunity at Scarlet that helped launch her to this point, should she be willing to sit on a piece of information that could prove hurtful for her mentor?
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Kat struggles with whether to be honest with Adena about feelings she’s been having, while an assignment to style Richard’s Mandy date forces Sutton to reevaluate where she’s at in her life.
The Bold Type airs Tuesdays at 8:00 on Freeform.
How would winning the Mandy Award impact Jane’s writing career? Could this be the most significant conflict that Kat and Adena have experienced as a couple? Is working with Richard’s date going to send Sutton spiraling or could it be the jolt she needs to move on?
