Jane, Sutton, and Kat are all riding on a wave of positive career momentum, as each has recently moved up the ranks at Scarlet and given themselves the chance to earn the live they’ve dreamed about. It took a lot of patience, biding their time after getting their feet in the door, and they’re not all where they ultimately want to be, but they finally have the means to prove themselves in a workplace where only the best of the best can survive. Yet for all the compassion and support that Jacqueline tries to provide the staff of Scarlet, they’re all still involved in a very volatile industry that is undergoing a transitional phase and on the next episode of The Bold Type, the discomfort that is the publishing industry in 2017 hits Scarlet.
Rumors of layoffs find their way into the magazine gossip mill and shake everyone to the core; anytime an industry goes through contraction and reorganization, it can be tough to deal with and the uncertainty that is Scarlet‘s current situation can’t help but have a negative impact on all those whose careers hang in the balance. Jane, for instance, has spent years working toward being a Scarlet writer and getting the opportunity to be the reassuring voice for young women that she leaned on when her mother died. This is the entirety of her professional identity, this desire to have her byline in the pages of Scarlet and provide more serious content to balance out the magazine’s lighter moments, and it could be taken away from her before she has a minute to enjoy the fact that she made it. Being the overthinking, overly prepared bundle of neuroses that she is, the job offer she receives from a Scarlet competitor should be a boon for her, as it ensures that she’d have a steady paycheck regardless of what happened at Scarlet and it shows that her writing has been making an impression with the right people. However, after years of reading the magazine and working toward this specific goal, the thought of leaving Scarlet on her own volition goes against her natural instinct and forces her to question whether she wants to take the risk and go to a new outlet or hold fast and see how things at Scarlet shake out.
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Sutton is presented with a tremendous professional opportunity when one of her co-workers stumbles, while Kat’s preoccupation with thoughts of Adena interrupts her attempt at organizing a Scarlet Readers Night and leads her to making an important decision.
The Bold Type airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on Freeform.
Will Jane, Sutton, and Kat all escape the layoff purge in one piece? Just how far will Jane drift toward this new opportunity? Could Kat be on her way to Paris to see Adena?
