Sutton’s relationship with Richard came with two strikes already, as the age difference and imbalance of power put strain on their connection before they could get off the ground. For as much as they like one another, and as comfortable as they are with one another outside the office, people at work finding out about their relationship could be the nail in the coffin for what they’re trying to build. Even if they could get by with the relationship based on office rules, the social pressure added to their relationship, the feeling that all eyes were on them and judging them for simply living their lives, would be too much to handle and force their dynamic into something unsustainable. But neither Sutton nor Richard are giving up without a fight and on the next episode of The Bold Type, the two take the next step toward solidifying their relationship.
Which comes in the form of Richard getting to know Jane and Kat outside the office. Though Richard wants to further immerse himself into Sutton’s personal life and give their relationship real roots, part of what’s motivating him is witnessing her hug Alex in the dry cleaners while on the hunt for the missing pendant. It was a visual of what Sutton’s life “should” be, being with someone age appropriate and on a similar level of professional experience, and it undoubtedly stirred up what insecurities Richard has about their relationship. His feelings for Sutton are such that he’s willing to do anything to be with her and deal with whatever obstacles Scarlet puts in their way, but he knows that Sutton is young, beautiful, ambitious, and has her entire life ahead of her. He doesn’t want to hold her back in any way, nor does he want to put her through a lot for something that ultimately doesn’t work, so Richard is trying to give their relationship enough of a foundation outside the office so that they could survive if things didn’t go well at Scarlet. But what happens when the first meeting with Jane and Kat doesn’t exactly go as planned?
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Jane comes to a realization about Ryan while out on a date with someone else, while Kat’s new staffer not checking her sources before posting on social media damages Scarlet‘s brand.
The Bold Type airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on Freeform.
Will the age and power differential eventually catch up to Sutton and Richard? Could Jane want to make the leap to exclusivity with Ryan? Would Jacqueline be more wary about putting Kat in charge of others if the newest staffer can’t turn it around?
