Jane’s first two articles for Scarlet have forced her to reveal personal information that she didn’t expect to have to divulge. When she received her promotion, she thought she would have more autonomy over what she would write about every month and that she could implement more serious stories into a magazine whose reputation has been built on sex, fitness, and fashion. However, Jane is starting from the bottom all over again and as such, she has to be malleable to whatever stories Jacqueline wants her to tell. It’s a bit of an uncomfortable position for her to be in, but she’s managed to turn out two well-written, well-received pieces that have shown her adaptability and willingness to put herself out there. So now that she’s went the extra mile for Jacqueline, is it time for the Scarlet editor-in-chief to return the favor?
On the next episode of The Bold Type, Jane pitches Jacqueline an article about Congresswoman Helen Wolfe, which gets approved due to Jane’s recent success. However, considering the publication that she works for, Jane has a difficult time in getting Congresswoman Wolfe to agree to a politically substantive interview; for as much as Scarlet has evolved over the years, it’s still seen as a lightweight publication more concerned with sex, fashion, and fitness than politics, so attempts at broadening its scope are met with derision and condescension. It has to be discouraging for her to come across this latest set of roadblocks after successfully proving herself to Jacqueline, especially since she can feel herself being pigeonholed as a sex/fashion writer rather than someone who can bring it just as hard on harder news as they do in more crowd pleasing fare. But Jane didn’t make it to where she is by giving up, so bumping her head against this latest glass ceiling is only an excuse to push that much harder.
Elsewhere on The Bold Type, Kat finds herself dealing with an internet troll after standing up for gender inequality in the field of virtual reality, while an opening in the fashion department brings Sutton’s dream a little closer to reality.
The Bold Type airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on Freeform.
