Summer Glau Talks About The Cape

Summer Glau Talks About The Cape

Summer Glau CapeAfter the Cape panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, KSiteTV was one of the outlets who was able to speak with the cast in roundtable interviews. Among the cast members we talked to was the popular Summer Glau, who has a legion of fans from her work on Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse, and other genre favorites.

Summer told us how the role differs from past roles such as River and Cameron. “I’ve always played kind of kick-ass girls, but Orwell’s different, because she’s on her own completely, and she obviously has a lot of resources that none of my other characters have had before, which is really fun,” she says. “I’m really exploring how it feels to play someone who really seems to have no fear. She’s going for it, going after these corporations and powerful men, and it’s different,” she reveals.

As for The Cape series itself, and how it differs from other shows in the same genre, Glau points to certain qualities the show has as being what would set the show apart. “I love the quality of hope and the quality of humor in it,” she says.

The 2010-2011 NBC Fall Schedule: That’s It?

NBC has now unveiled their Fall 2010 schedules, and I have to admit, I’m a little underwhelmed.

I was optimistic for the network’s many pilot pick-ups, and the cancellations of Heroes and Law & Order: Original Variety said to me that the network might be pulling a “scorched Earth” tactic to leave us with an almost completely new schedule.

Instead, unless something changes, we get more of the same.

Mondays are just like before – Chuck followed by two dramas that will either succeed or fail very quickly. How many shows have tried and failed at that 10PM slot? I’m glad they renewed Chuck, but was hoping it’d go somewhere else (like say Wednesdays) to get out of the Monday crossfire. On that same note, Undercovers seemed like a good fit to either lead off the night or take the 9PM slot. The show has great people working on it, an attractive cast, and could be the kind of hit that’ll put a dent into CBS’ Monday comedies. Maybe another year…

Tuesdays haven’t changed at all.

Wednesdays, again, is where I’d put something that already has a loyal fan base (ie, Chuck.) I’m surprised, also, that NBC is running two Law & Order shows back to back. SVU always works well at 10PM; I probably would have kept it there and ran Law & Order: Los Angeles on Mondays at 10 if it were my decision. (Maybe this is why I’m not a TV executive)

Thursdays are one of the few nights that worked for NBC this past year, for the most part, so they’re not making many changes. Love Bites at 10PM seems a little weird to me though, because I would think their target audience of women would be watching Private Practice. Still, for a network that is trying to rebuild itself, I’m surprised so much of it seems to be the same as always.

Fridays have reality – which is what most networks seem to burn off on that day. I grew up at a time when Friday night TV was a very big deal. The Dukes of Hazzard was my first “favorite show” and I remember the early 90′s when you had TGIF on ABC but also quality series like Picket Fences on CBS. Now it seems to be where shows go to die. NBC is running their new Jimmy Smits series Outlaw there… but it seems kind of lost and alone over there. Too bad, because it looks like a quality show, although I liked the title Garza better.

I have no real opinion on their Sunday either way. And oh yeah, The Cape and a few other shows are waiting for midseason.

Maybe NBC has a plan for what this new schedule will bring to them. After all, the people doing these jobs are more experienced and better paid than I am. But I do believe that if NBC had been a little bit more daring, their Fall schedule could be more along the lines of “extraordinary.”

NBC Picks Up The Chase

NBC has put in a series order for The Chase from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, continuing the streak of David Nutter-directed pilots that go to series.

Here’s the NBC press release:

NBC PICKS UP NEW DRAMA SERIES ‘CHASE,’ FROM JERRY BRUCKHEIMER, FOR 2010-11 SEASON

Drama Becomes NBC’s Fifth New Scripted Series Announced for New Season

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – May 10, 2010 – NBC has picked up its fifth scripted series pilot for the 2010-11 season in “Chase,” a new drama from Emmy Award-winning executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer (“CSI” franchise, “The Amazing Race,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” films) and executive producer Jennifer Johnson (“Cold Case”).

The announcement was made by Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios.

“Chase” joins previously announced “Undercovers,” “The Event,” “Love Bites,” and “Outsourced” as the fifth new scripted series currently announced for NBC’s new season with additional pickups yet to be announced.

“’Chase’ has all the undeniable elements of a thrill ride that you would expect from a Jerry Bruckheimer action series,” said Bromstad. “Equally important, it also features a great cast. Kelli Giddish is a breakout star as the lead.”

“Chase” is a fast-paced drama that drops viewers smack into the middle of a game of cat-and-mouse as a team of U.S. marshals hunts down America’s most dangerous fugitives. Kelli Giddish (“Past Life”) stars as U.S. Marshal Annie Frost, a cowboy boot-wearing deputy whose sharp mind and unique Texas upbringing help her track down the violent criminals on the run.

Cole Hauser (“K-Ville”), Amaury Nolasco (“Prison Break”), Rose Rollins (“The L Word”) and Jesse Metcalfe (“Desperate Housewives”) also star as members of Frost’s elite team.

“Chase” is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc., in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Warner Bros. Television. Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman (“CSI” franchise, “The Amazing Race,” “Cold Case”) and Johnson serve as executive producers, while KristieAnne Reed is co-executive producer. David Nutter (“The Mentalist,” “Without a Trace” “The X-Files”) directed and is executive producer of the pilot which was written by Johnson.

Good News For Heroes, Chuck, and The Cape? NBC’s Bromstad Speaks

THR’s James Hibberd today posted an exclusive interview with NBC Entertainment President Angela Bromstad. In it, she talked about the prospects for NBC’s Fall 2010 schedule, and she had some very promising things to say about three series that have been talked about quite a lot here on KSiteTV.

On The Cape, Bromstad says that it looks fantastic. “We just saw it with special effects today. It’s close-ended and the hero catches the bad guy every week. Decisions are still outstanding, though, because we haven’t gotten back our testing yet,” she says. A pick-up for The Cape does not necessarily mean the end of Heroes, however. “With serialized shows like Parenthood and Heroes that don’t perform well in repeats we could be looking at shows sharing the same time slots (split between fall and spring). I wouldn’t count anything out. With shows like that we really have to sit down and figure out all the pieces of the schedule,” she says.

Fans of Chuck might finally be able to rest easy. “It’s our highest performing Monday night show,” Bromstad says. “We look at it as a very strong player and it’s a show that matches up with our new shows. It’s too early for me to say for certain as it’s a conversation we’re going to have next week.”

NBC will announce its Fall 2010 schedule in one week, on Monday, May 17. You can read the full interview with Angela Bromstad, where she talks about the rest of NBC’s possible plans, here.

UPDATE: Variety‘s Michael Schneider has weighed in on the above-mentioned shows in a new column He says Heroes “is expected to get a short 13-episode order to wrap things up — but given how disappointing that franchise has become, there’s likely not a lot of enthusiasm among execs at the net to go out of their way to give it a firm go before next week.” For Chuck, “a renewal seems to be a given.” The Cape is “on the hot list.”
