The CW has attempted to spin off arguably their biggest long-term success, Supernatural, into another series twice now – first with the maligned Supernatural: Bloodlines which had very little connection to the parent series, and this year with Wayward Sisters which had strong ties to the source material. Wayward fandom was not happy in May when it was announced that the spinoff — which kicked off from an episode of Supernatural’s 13th season — wouldn’t be going to series.

At the recent Television Critics Association press tour, The CW’s President Mark Pedowitz addressed the Wayward Sisters situation — and admitted that maybe the parent series is all that will work.

“We were very happy with the women who were in Wayward Sisters, the spinoff,” Pedowitz said. “We had only a certain number of slots this year, so it just didn’t get there. If there’s a great idea that they want to go forward with, we’re open to listen. It is a great franchise.”

However, is that it for the franchise? Pedowitz has concerns. “Supernatural may be Jared and Jensen, and there may not be a franchise beyond that,” he said.

And, yes: Supernatural will continue as long as Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki want to do it. Season 39, here we come!

Supernatural Season 14 premieres Thursday, October 11 on The CW.
