Prior to Comic-Con this year, a “bleeding cool” comic book rumor website posted an article alleging that The CW and Warner Bros. Television were negotiating with FOX (broadcasters of Gotham) to allow for Batman to appear alongside their other DC Comics heroes, and that in addition to that, the characters of Oracle and Batwoman would be appearing in Supergirl Season 2.
According to producers at the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, these rumors are not true.
“That wasn’t true. We saw that rumor online as well. That would be a neat trick if somebody could pull it off, but that’s not happening,” Andrew Kreisberg said when specifically asked about the Batman rumor.
Even with that put to rest, one journalist asked about Batwoman appearing on Supergirl this season, which is also not true, and got denials from at least three producers.
“We go through DC [for] everything,” Greg Berlanti explained. “At the end of the year, we bring them what we’re thinking about for the subsequent year. They tell us sometimes who are showing up on the other shows. We try to stay within the territory. We’re very fortunate enough, and they’ve been incredibly supportive, about whom we have and where we have, and we have so many different characters to go to still that we haven’t used for the previous years that we haven’t delved into as much of the waters where you see the shows like often going.”
DC does allow the producers to use their big guns, though, as evidenced by the inclusion of Superman in Supergirl Season 2.
“We had always hoped to end last year with him,” Berlanti recalled. “We wanted to have enough of the year and time to establish Supergirl as her own character, and we knew that this shadow was large, but we also didn’t want to play with the audience in that regard. We wanted to have her established enough, and then introduce him, and then we had always kind of talked internally about the possibility that he would sort of show up for the finale. By the time we got there, enough stories were in motion, and we didn’t feel like we needed it. When we went in to pitch for CBS and CW for the subsequent year, it was just always sort of part of our initial pitch,” he explained.
“She has got a really famous cousin,” Ali Adler added. “We have to tell the story.”
The DC Comics series on The CW premiere in October on the network. You can see some photos from the panel below. And, again, a fair warning: Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.
