Not content with only renewing The Mick and Lethal Weapon this week, FOX has given musical drama Star the greenlight for a second season, as well.
“Lee Daniels is a true visionary and he and Tom Donaghy have delivered a series with a unique and meaningful point of view,” said FOX Entertainment president David Madden.
Though Star isn’t a hit on the scale of Empire, the series has been steady and solid in its midseason run, performing around the level of recently renewed Lethal Weapon and Lucifer in Live + 7 numbers, according to Deadline. The most important mission Star had going into this season was to keep the Empire time slot warm and ensure that the lights were still on for when the megahit soap makes its spring return, which it’s done in companionship with lead-in Lethal Weapon. We don’t yet know how Empire will return, but if it comes back stronger than anticipated, Star will have played a big part in that and might stay a midseason show in order to sustain FOX’s flagship drama for as long as possible.
Star joins a FOX 2017-18 schedule that includes Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Empire, Lucifer, The Mick, and Lethal Weapon. Among the FOX series yet to learn their fates for next season are Gotham, the lone Warner Bros. series on the network still in limbo; critical darling Pitch; and comedy veterans New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
From Lee Daniels (Empire), Star tells the story of Star (Jude Demorest), Simone (Brittany O’Grady), and Alexandra (Ryan Destiny), three aspiring musicians who form a girl group and attempt to conquer the music scene in Atlanta. However, given Star’s rough past in the foster care system, Simone’s substance abuse issues, and Alexandra’s desire to make her own name apart from her famous parents, the journey to fame, fortune, and musical notoriety proves to be much more difficult than any of them had anticipated.
In addition to Demorest, O’Grady, and Destiny, Star stars Queen Latifah (Chicago), Benjamin Bratt (Modern Family), Quincy Brown (Dope), and newcomer Amiyah Scott.
Star airs Wednesdays at 9:00 on FOX.
