ABC has given its second comedy series order for 2018-2019 to Single Parents, another series to add to its burgeoning family brand.
From JJ Philbin and Liz Merriweather (New Girl), Single Parents follows a group of single parents as they lean on each other to help raise their 7-year-old kids and maintain some kind of personal lives outside of parenthood.
While the series, produced by 20th Century Fox, is another comedy for ABC that focuses on the family, it’s an interesting side step as it focuses just as much on the parental friendships as it does the life lessons they teach their children. If ABC is to keep its brand fresh, they’re going to have to do shows like this and expand what it means to be an ABC comedy through different approaches to family-based storytelling.
The series stars Taran Killam (Saturday Night Live), Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond), and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl).
Single Parents joins an ABC newbie roster for 2018-2019 that includes A Million Little Things, The Rookie, and an untitled Goldbergs spinoff.
