When Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 premieres this Friday (May 10) on ABC, the organization will have a new Director – Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie as played by Henry Simmons on the show. Last week, we attended a press day for the series where he talked about his new responsibility on the series.
“I started out as a mechanic,” Simmons recalled of his origins on the show in Season 2. “I didn’t want to fight, and then okay, I’m out fighting and all that. Then we accelerate years later, and Daisy was like ‘I think it should be you’.”
“There’s a lot to deal with. We have a member that’s out there somewhere. A team member that we have to find. We have an occurrence that’s happening around Earth that is unpredictable and deadly. So here’s a lot I have to deal with, [that] I have to solve,” he continued.
During our discussion we also asked Simmons who his favorite Marvel character from the movies happens to be.
“Everyone’s like, ‘he’s going to say Black Panther…’ But seriously, it is Black Panther. I mean, it is. I mean, that’s the one that I’m like… I see my image. He’s a Black man. And honestly for me, it may be personal, but to me that was the best [movie]. For me. I absolutely loved that movie. I even love the way they introduced him in Civil War,” Simmons answered. “He’s my favoite.”
Does Henry Simmons think that Mack and T’Challa would get along?
“Yeah, I think they would. So we should have that movie,” he laughed.
And on a similar note, would former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury be happy to see Mack in charge?
“Oh, that’d be great. If Nick Fury saw me, he’d be like, ‘well done, man. Well done’,” Simmons said, doing a dead-on Samuel L. Jackson voice impression. “That’s what he would say. That would be fun.”
