Who are Bob and Carol? The all new episode of Beauty and the Beast introduces the married couple that could be mentors to VinCat, or… possibly assassins. Our epic couple has a bit too much on their plate of life, JT ends up in the hospital (again), Tess vies for a promotion, and poor Heather sticks her big pink book where it doesn’t belong.
Prescription – “Us”
The test of VinCat’s engagement continues as they try to figure out how they can even spend quality time together while juggling their growing list of commitments. Unfortunately, the overwhelmed couple is under so much pressure that they are willing to rush to the altar just to check it off their list. My, how romantic. It’s understandable. They’ve already been through so much and vowed over and over again to be with one another no matter what. Marriage is just getting it in writing, right? Why make a big deal out of it? What they need to learn is that marriage is a big deal. It’s more than a proclamation of love, it’s the melding of their lives. The engagement period is the trial run and is the time to figure out how to deal with their problems before saying, “I do.” They have a leg up when it comes to tough situations, so I’m sure they’ll be able to handle it.
Superpowers and Promotions
Poor JT ends up in the hospital yet again in this episode, but I don’t think he’ll have to worry too much about medical bills. The effects of the serum are finally revealed as JT’s bullet wound is completely healed in less than 24 hours. Will this somehow drive him to insanity? Or is each person affected differently? Bob and Carol seem to have been part of the experiments as well and so far the only success. They are in complete control of themselves, as far as we know. And how could having the power to heal himself be a threat to others? One review I had read posited that JT could have been the shooter of Agent Thomas. Like he was possibly being used as a sleeper agent. That would have been awesome, but sadly that wasn’t the case. At least for now. The question now is, will he tell his friends, or will he keep it to himself?
Tess got her promotion! Not that any of us thought she wouldn’t. But conflict between her new job and her friends is already being set up. Tess was worried that constantly being pulled away to help her friends would leave her unprepared for her interview. The former Captain even told her straight up to not let Catherine ruin her chance at getting the job. I’m glad they put that in there. We know that Catherine is working hard to save lives, but from an outside perspective she looks completely worthless at her job and is dragging Tess down with her. Luckily, Catherine was actually the one to help clinch the promotion for Tess, handing her Espinosa and his Penthouse of Illegal Fun. Still, just because Tess has the job now doesn’t mean its all lollypops and candy canes. We know that Catherine will try to use Tess’ position for her own means. How will this affect their friendship?
Whose Wedding Are We Talking About?
Heather, Heather, Heather. I feel so bad for her this season. The poor girl gets dumped and then throws herself into helping Cat and Vincent with their wedding, but she’s still holding onto her perfect wedding. The fact that she has to watch her sister be engaged and get married now that she won’t have that for herself must be really hard. As a younger sibling I know the pain of watching your older sister get what they want while you continuously sit on the sidelines. You’re happy for them, but it’s really hard when you can’t be happy too. Not only that, but the way she keeps being treated as an annoyance really bothers me. Catherine is always so caught up in her own problems that she is completely blind to the pain her sister is going through. Thankfully they had their cute scene at the park in the end, so that made up for a good bit of it. And Heather’s character was totally the best dressed for this episode, especially that black and pink dress she wore at the houseboat. Catherine should let her plan her wedding. This girl’s got taste!
How It All Came Together
In an episode written by Melissa Glenn and directed by Stuart Gillard, we continue the season at a good pace. Little by little they reveal more of the main story arc. And even though we still don’t know that much yet, the ride has not been a slow one. This episode was quick moving and action packed. Yet, even with all that there were still many character moments sprinkled throughout. Some of my favorite moments included Vincent falling asleep, Cat and Tess’ discussion of the fact (yeah, falling asleep before is never good), Heather scaring Vincent when she wakes him up (those two have such great comedic chemistry), and JT’s list of powers. And let’s not forget Vincent leaving a note for Cat. They haven’t done that in a long time and it was a welcome callback. The balance of this episode did sway more towards the plot heavy elements, but the fact that the writers can still keep in all those funny moments deserves quite a bit of praise. The show has found such a wonderful mix between the dark storyline and the light comedy, while not losing any of the romance, that in some ways this is the best the show has ever been. I think they have really found their footing and who they are as a show.
A big part of that is how they have been portraying themselves in the supernatural genre. While they have beasts and now people with a myriad of superpowers, they keep everything quite realistic, never fully crossing over into the paranormal. Everything with these experiments has been focused on the brain and what it can do. I know that some people thought Bob and Carol’s abilities were a bit of a stretch, but I don’t think so. Being able to heighten your awareness and speed up your reaction time seems completely plausible to me. I’m loving the direction they are taking with these experiments and can’t wait to see what else they come up with.
To Sum Up
The season continues to build in mystery and intrigue, while simultaneously managing to keep the show fun and full of delightful character moments. This is shaping up to be the best season yet.
