Deadline is reporting that the second season of OWN drama Queen Sugar has added Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue), Alimi Ballard (The Catch), and Margot Bingham (Boardwalk Empire), all in a recurring capacity. Lawrence will be playing sophisticated, self-motivated Lorna, a businesswoman who happens to be Charley’s mother. Ballard is set as Dr. Robert Dubois, a charming epidemiologist who makes an impression on Nova, while Bingham will portray pop singer Tamar Judith, who crosses paths with Davis.
Queen Sugar season two finds Charley, Nova, and Ralph Angel distant from one another, even with the progress made toward stabilizing and monetizing the farm. While Nova finds herself questioning the role activism plays in her life and whether it might be worth scaling back her commitment in order to help her relationship with Calvin, Ralph Angel continues his struggle with adjusting to life on the outside all the while weighing what the note Ernest left him could mean for his future. Meanwhile, Charley relocates to Saint Josephine Parish in order to run the mill, but she encounters resistance to those opposed to the idea of a black woman in a white-dominated business.
In addition to her role on the ABC cop drama, Lawrence has appeared on the likes of Shameless, Rizzoli & Isles, and Drop Dead Diva, while Ballard’s television credits include Numb3rs, Hollywood Heights, and American Dreams. Bingham, meanwhile, has been seen on The Family, Matador, and In Between Men.
The second season of Queen Sugar is set to premiere with a two-night event on Tuesday, June 20th and Wednesday, June 21st before settling into its Wednesdays at 10:00 slot the following week. You can check out the first trailer for season two here.
