USA has announced that drug drama Queen of the South has been renewed for a third 13-episode season, which should premiere in summer 2018.
Based on telenovela La Reina del Sur, adapted for television by M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (The Final Girls), and currently showran by Natalie Chaidez (12 Monkeys), Queen of the South follows Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga), a woman loosely connected to the cartel world who is forced to go on the run after her dealer boyfriend is killed. The show’s second season has found Teresa growing closer to cartel overlord Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcon) in an attempt to keep herself safe and dealing with the fact that Guero faked his death to evade Epifanio’s target.
In addition to Braga and Falcon, Queen of the South stars Peter Gadiot (Once Upon a Time in Wonderland), Hemky Madera (Rango), Jon-Michael Eker (Narcos), and Joaquim de Almedia (Desperado). Ranking as Thursday night’s No. 1 cable series among P18-49 and the night’s top cable drama among P25-54, P18-34, and P2+ year to date, the series is part of a scripted slate for USA that includes Suits, The Sinner, Playing House, Falling Water, and Colony.
Queen of the South airs tonight at 10:00 on USA. You can check out photos and a preview from tonight’s episode here.
