When you’re in power in a dangerous business, you have to watch your back. Even if you’re blessed with innumerable allies and confidantes, there are just as many, if not more, people who want nothing more than to see you fall so they can take your throne. Being on top of a cutthroat world is a temporary occupation that provides the king (or queen) of the hill with enough power, money, and ego to make the whole ordeal worthwhile; you might lose everything you hold dear, you might give the best years of your life to something that can sometimes feel intangible, but the moment you realize that you’re top dog can make it all worth it. Yet there’s a difference between being careful and succumbing to paranoia, with the latter the most self-sabotaging way of offering your spot up to the hungriest contender.
On the next episode of Queen of the South, Camila has placed herself and her entire crew in the middle of a war with Epifanio after she wouldn’t sign the divorce papers he brought to their meeting. As a result, she knows that he’s going to hit her with everything he’s got in order to break her and force her hand into coming home; Epifanio has the connections and manpower to really put a hurting on Camila’s already struggling business, so much so that Camila feels that she needs to reassess the loyalty of those closest to her to weed out anyone who could prove to be her downfall. There’s an inherent lack of trust involved with running a cartel and that gets exacerbated by Camila’s refusal to allow her husband to strip away her independence. She knows that if she gives up, she not only puts herself in danger, she pigeonholes herself as second fiddle to Epifanio and loses any opportunity to build a life for herself. But in continuously sniffing around the allies that are still in her orbit, could Camila be pushing away the few people helping her avoid collapse?
Elsewhere on Queen of the South, Epifanio finds himself at the mercy of the colonel, while Teresa and company’s move to rig a narco horse race threatens to blow up in their faces when old enemies come face to face.
Queen of the South airs Thursdays at 10:00 on USA.
What will Epifanio’s first step toward dispatching the colonel be? Will Camila’s paranoia eventually cause her to make a slip? Is this opportunity to prove her worth going to pan out for Teresa?
