Deadline is reporting that FOX comedy pilot This Country is set to star Chelsea Holmes (At What Cost?) and The Kids Are Alright alum Sam Straley.
Based on the acclaimed British series of the same name, with Jenny Bicks (Divorce) adapting for American television, This Country follows small town cousins Kelly and Shrub Mallet as they’re trailed by a documentary crew assigned to study the concerns of young adults. If ordered, the series would follow the eccentric twosome while they pursue their dreams, confront challenges, and lean on each other when times get tough.
Holmes will play Kelly, a young woman whose outward toughness came as a result of her estranged relationship with her father. Inside she’s a major softie who dreams of being an entrepreneur. Straley will portray temperamental, artsy Shrub, who wants to fall in love and head to art school. The two join a cast that includes Seann William Scott (Lethal Weapon) as Father Joe, a leader in the community who acts as something of a father figure to Kelly and Shrub; Taylor Ortega (Kim Possible) as Kelly and Shrub’s beautiful, successful former classmate Nadine; and newcomer Krystal Smith as menacing Big Mandy, a woman who loves tattoos and her two dogs.
This Country is one of only two traditional comedy pilots in contention at FOX for 2020-21, joining female friendship single cam Pivoting. The network also has a straight-to-series order for animated series Housebroken and a series commitment for a multi-cam starring Mayim Bialik.
