Deadline is reporting that Last Man on Earth alum Mary Steenburgen has joined NBC musical dramedy pilot Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. She’ll be playing Maggie, the steadfast mother of a woman with an unusual ability.
From Austin Winsberg (Jake in Progress) and described as What Women Want meets La La Land, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist follows Zoey (Jane Levy), a socially awkward woman in her late 20s who suddenly is able to hear the innermost thoughts of people around her as songs and even big musical numbers that they perform just for her. If ordered, the series would follow Zoey as she attempted to use her gift to help others.
In addition to her role on the dearly departed FOX comedy, Steenburgen’s television credits include The Conners, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Orange Is the New Black. She joins a cast that also includes Skylar Astin (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and Glee alum Alex Newell.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is part of a slate of drama pilots for NBC that includes inventively structured murder trial drama Prism; Bone Collector adaptation Lincoln; conspiracy thriller Emergence; terminal illness drama Council of Dads; and Jimmy Smits-starrer Bluff City Law.
