Deadline is reporting that Parenthood alum Joy Bryant has joined the untitled legal drama pilot in development at ABC.
From Hank Steinberg (The Last Ship), with 50 Cent (Power) executive producing, the untitled drama follows Aaron (Nicholas Pinnock), a successful nightclub owner unjustly accused of drug dealing and thrown into prison with a life sentence when he wouldn’t plea bargain. After putting himself through online law school and passing the bar, Aaron begins practicing behind bars, focusing on inmates like himself who are in jail for crimes they didn’t commit.
Bryant is set as Aaron’s ex-wife Marie, who still loves him despite his arrest nine years ago. Marie is intensely protective over their 17-year-old daughter Jasmine and knows that she has to move on with her life with Aaron still incarcerated.
In addition to her role on the NBC drama, Bryant’s television credits include Ballers, Good Girls Revolt, and Rosewood. She joins a cast that also includes Game of Thrones alum Indira Varma.
The untitled ABC legal drama is part of a pilot slate that includes romance The Baker and the Beauty; family drama Heart of Life; stalker thriller The Hypnotist’s Love Story; new takes on NYPD Blue and New York Undercover; P.I. drama Stumptown; Bermuda Triangle-set Triangle; and relationship drama Until the Wedding.
