A prequel series to FOX’s Gotham will be coming our way — on the cable channel Epix.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news this morning that Epix has given a 10-episode series order to Pennyworth, a prequel series based on the early years of Batman’s butler  which THR notes is not actually a spinoff nor is it set in the same world/storyline as Gotham, despite coming from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon, who is directing the first episode.

On Gotham, Alfred Pennyworth is played by Sean Pertwee.

The show will explore Alfred’s origins as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne (Bruce Wayne’s billionaire father) in 1960s London.

As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series,” Epix president Michael Wright said in a statement to THR. “We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”

“Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate,” the producers said in their own statement.
