abc designated survivorWEDNESDAY

SHILO’S PREDICTIONS: 8:00 The Goldbergs; 8:30 Speechless; 9:00 Modern Family; 9:30 Libby & Malcolm; 10:00 Designated Survivor
CRAIG’S PREDICTIONS: 8:00 The Goldbergs; 8:30 Speechless; 9:00 Modern Family; 9:30 American Housewife; 10:00 Designated Survivor
ACTUAL SCHEDULE: 8:00 The Goldbergs; 8:30 Speechless; 9:00 Modern Family; 9:30 American Housewife; 10:00 Designated Survivor

SHILO: Exhibit C that ABC hated its comedy development: Giving a time slot upgrade to American Housewife. This is much less egregious than the Fresh Off the Boat upgrade because ABC owns Housewife and they seem to see it as an heir apparent to the Modern Family throne, so if they didn’t like their development enough to put something new after Modern Family, trying to boost a network-owned sophomore is the best move they could’ve made. I do have to wonder, though, about the last time ABC tried this with Suburgatory, which was given a time slot upgrade following a creatively and commercially promising first season following The Middle. However, Suburgatory badly underperformed following Modern Family and instead of becoming the next ABC comedy cornerstone, it was booted down to midseason and quietly cancelled the following season. If American Housewife underperforms, I don’t think it’ll be treated quite the same, but there is definitely some risk in trying to boost an established comedy vs. giving something new the platform for sampling.

CRAIG: I got it right! Really, though, I’m glad ABC is giving American Housewife a chance to get more viewers by slotting against Modern Family, which has to be in Season 17 or something by now. Has Manny graduated college yet? Also, props to ABC for not messing with a good thing and keeping Designated Survivor on Wednesday nights.
