Netflix has announced that the black comedy Maniac starring Emma Stone will premiere Friday, September 21st.
Based on the Norwegian series of the same name from Hakon Bast Mossige & Espen PA Lervaag, with Patrick Somerville (The Bridge) to write and Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) to direct, Maniac follows Annie Landsberg (Stone), feeling aimless and disaffected after her relationships with her mother and sister become strained, and schizophrenic industrialist spawn Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons.
In addition to Stone and Hill, Maniac stars Sonoya Mizuno (Crazy Rich Asians), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers), Julia Garner (Ozark), Jemima Kirke (Girls), and Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters). In addition to writing, Patrick Somerville is the series creator and executive producer.
Maniac joins a slate of upcoming shows for ever-prolific Netflix that includes supernatural drama The Innocents, controversial dramedy Insatiable, Tony Danza procedural The Good Cop, Rev. Run multi-cam All About the Washingtons, Matt Groening-created animated comedy Disenchantment, and Hindi horror miniseries Ghoul, among many others.
