CBS has officially renewed Matt LeBlanc comedy Man with a Plan for a third season, the network confirmed today.
Despite the show’s solid retention from lead-in Kevin Can Wait, a marketable star in LeBlanc, and the show being halfway to syndication, it looked vulnerable this upfronts season after being left off the annual CBS mass renewal. It seemed as if the network was planning a major Monday overhaul and Man with a Plan, which came into this season with just a 13-episode order despite getting 22 episodes last season, was something that didn’t seem to be in the network’s highest regard. But all the positives it has going for it were too much for CBS to deny, so the show will be back for a third (and fourth, considering they own it and it’s a syndicatable property) season.
There’s a high likelihood that Man with a Plan ends up like it did this season, off the fall schedule but the first comedy off the bench if whatever CBS puts forth in September falls apart. In a way, the show has become the network’s new Rules of Engagement – a reliable performer that might not get scheduling priority but gets to air out its orders in relative peace.
Man with a Plan airs Mondays at 8:30 on CBS.
