Deadline is reporting that TV Land has cancelled George Lopez comedy Lopez and pop culture-meets-politics talk show Throwing Shade.
The move comes as Viacom is continuing to restructure in the wake of ratings declines. The conglomerate has been busy reshaping its multitude of networks in recent months, whether it be getting VH1 and MTV out of scripted, signing a deal with Tyler Perry for BET-earmarked originals, or building up the scripted slate for Spike’s upcoming rebrand to Paramount Network. With the cancellation of Lopez and Throwing Shade, and Nobodies moving to Paramount, TV Land is left with only Younger and Teachers in its originals coffer. The network currently has no projects in development, so for the time being, Viacom will be focusing its scripted assets and attention elsewhere.
From John Altschuler (Silicon Valley), Dave Krinsky (King of the Hill), George Lopez (George Lopez), and Jeff Stilson (The Daily Show), Lopez followed a semi-fictionalized version of Lopez as he attempted to balance his stand-up career with interpersonal relationships and struggled with what it means to be a celebrity in the social media era. The first season focused on George working to secure a Vegas residency, while season two featured a storyline where George was knee deep in pilot season.
In addition to Lopez, Lopez starred Anthony “CiTRiC” Campos (Idiocracy), Maronzio Vance (Enlisted), and Hayley Huntley (Review).
Based on the popular podcast, Throwing Shade was hosted by Bryan Safi and Erin Gibson and played something like a gayer, more political Weekend Update, with Safi and Gibson bantering about the weekly news and participating in sketches.
