FOX has cut their scripted bubble in half by officially renewing family comedy Last Man Standing and medical drama The Resident.
“The Resident and Last Man Standing are such important parts of Fox, and we’re so pleased they will be returning next season,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “We want to thank all of the writers, actors, directors, producers and talented crews for both of these shows, and, of course, our friends and producing partners at 20th Century Fox Television.”
Both renewals were expected. Last Man Standing averages 8 million total viewers across platforms, making it FOX’s most watched comedy, and will almost certainly be paired with upcoming multi-cam Call Me Kat. Whether next season will be the last for the Tim Allen comedy, which saw some ratings erosion in 2019-20 and is almost certainly expensive, remains to be seen. Meanwhile, The Resident averages 10 million total viewers across platforms and ranks as one of broadcast’s top 10 dramas in the 18-34 demo.
The renewals of Last Man Standing and The Resident mean that the only FOX scripted shows awaiting word of their fate are Prodigal Son and Outmatched. It’s unclear as to when news on either will be announced, as FOX’s fall schedule has no returning live-action scripted, meaning that they still have a lot of time to decide each show’s fate.
