In the wake of the Dark Matter cancellation confirmation, Syfy has announced that fellow Friday space drama Killjoys has been renewed for two final seasons, with the 10-episode fourth season coming in 2018 and the 10-episode fifth in 2019.
“Helmed by Lovretta and driven by the superb storytelling, we are excited to bring Killjoys back for two final seasons,” said Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President Scripted Development for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “Tonight’s game-changing season finale sets the tone for the final chapters of our bounty hunter’s space adventures and we cannot wait for our talented cast and crew to bring to life what is sure to be an epic journey that will leave our passionate fans on the edge of their seats.”
From Michelle Lovretta (Lost Girl), Killjoys follows a trio of interplanetary bounty hunters as they find themselves on the brink of a multiplanetary war. The series, which stars Hannah John-Kamen, Aaron Ashmore, and Luke MacFarlane, averaged a 0.17 in the 18-49 demo this summer, down a scant 5% from last season and putting it squarely above the shows it aired alongside.
This isn’t the first time a Syfy series has its end game mapped out ahead of time. Haven received a final 20-episode renewal, while Warehouse 13 was given a six-episode victory lap, Lost Girl had a slightly extended pre-announced final season, and Continuum got to go out on its own terms after four seasons.
The third season of Killjoys airs its finale tonight on Syfy.
