The CW has (finally) confirmed a fifth season renewal for praised zombie drama iZombie.
On the surface, everything was pointing toward an iZombie renewal this year. There had only been one drama during the Mark Pedowitz era that made it to a second season without crossing the 70-episode threshold. The CW was expanding to Sundays for the first time in a decade, doubling down on limited orders for its dramas, and gearing up to fully embrace summer, so there was plenty of scheduling space. The network’s Rob Thomas pilot It’s the End of the World As We Know It wasn’t generating much in the way of buzz, so as to not interfere with iZombie‘s chances. But despite solid reviews and okay ratings, the show lingered on the bubble for quite a while, to the point where it looked like The CW was seriously considering letting it go.
It’s as yet unclear whether next season of iZombie will be A) its last and/or B) 13 episodes. The series will likely assume a late-season filler role that Reign, The 100, and The Originals did later in their lives, but it all depends on how The CW approaches its schedule next year and how many shows it wants to let go at one time.
iZombie airs Mondays at 9:00 on The CW.
