After cancelling both Frequency and No Tomorrow, The CW has made its last renewal decisions for 2016-17, opting to renew both The Originals and iZombie. This will be a fifth season for the former, padding an already stout episode count, while the latter has proven to be a valuable utility player for the network.

iZombie‘s renewal chances was the more concrete of the two, as The CW hasn’t cancelled a third season drama in a decade and iZombie still has episodes to bank for the network’s Netflix deal. There had been a possibility of The Originals saying goodbye, as The CW was said to be considering picking up five new shows, but the show has overachieved in its fourth season and put forth numbers on Friday that make ordering new episodes financially feasible. Plus, the network clearly didn’t want to rid itself of the Vampire Diaries universe just yet.

From Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars), iZombie follows a former medical resident who becomes a zombie. The series, based on the DC Comic series of the same name, stars Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time).

From Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries), The Originals continues the story of the notorious Mikaelson family, a clan of vampires first introduced on The Vampire Diaries.

The CW’s 2017-18 schedule will be revealed Thursday, May 18th.
