On S.H.I.E.L.D., Bennet plays a scrappy computer hacker type named “Skye.” We caught up with Ms. Bennet at the ABC portion of this year’s TV press tour to find out a little bit more about what is coming up for her and her character. Our questions to her are printed bold; her answers are not.
KSITETV: Going from Nashville to something that is so action-oriented, was it a big change for you?
CHLOE BENNET: Yes. I think when you go to set in Nashville, you kind of expect a chill day. It’s good music; it’s relaxing. And then going to work on S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s a bit different. You go and you have people jumping out of burning buildings, and you get in flying cars. You’re climbing, you’re jumping… it’s totally different but so much fun, and so worth it.
Everyone is so secretive about Skye and her past. Have you made up anything in your mind about where she might come from?
You know, I have. They’ve given me a bit more information from what the public knows. But, yeah. I definitely have. I don’t want to do too much, because I don’t want to be wrong to what they play on screen in the future. But, yeah… she definitely, in my mind, has a certain history. She’s very funny, she’s very charismatic, but it comes from maybe a lonelier place, and a bit of a darker place, but she always keeps things light, which is great. She’s definitely looking for something, I feel.
The pilot makes a reference to Skye doing cosplay in front of Stark Tower. In your opinion, if we ever were to see a flashback to such a thing, which Marvel character do you think Skye would dress up as, and why?
Jean Grey. Phoenix! She probably would have a better outfit. I would give myself a red wig… or maybe Storm. That would be cool!
How about a character that is within the Marvel Films wheelhouse?
I feel like Skye would be a She-Hulk, or a female Loki, or something like that.
Have they provided you with any comics now that you’ve gotten this job?
Yes. Of course! On one of the first day, they gave us a big old stack of comics. That was amazing. Even the second I got the audition, I went to the comic book store and bought like crazy.
What is it like to work with Clark Gregg?
You know, sometimes we’ll be on set, and I’ll just kind of look over and do a double take, and be like “Agent Coulson! Look at him in his suit, walking towards me…” It’s very weird. But it’s great. He’s fantastic. He’s the on-screen leader and the off-screen leader.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres Tuesday, September 24 on ABC.
