On The CW’s The 100, the character Raven crashed into the series — literally — early in the run, and she’s one of the rare characters that we got to see both on the Ark and on the ground. As the first season of the series progressed, we learned Raven had a past with Finn, and we also saw the character’s fearlessness.
Last week, we spoke with actress Lindsey Morgan about what’s happened for Raven so far and what could be happening for the character in the future. The Season 1 finale of The 100 airs on Wednesday night, June 11. As the interview is long, we’ve split it into multiple pages.
Our questions for Lindsey are posted in bold; her answers are not.
KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: Raven got hurt pretty badly last week. Can you give any clues as to what’s coming next for her?
LINDSEY MORGAN: It’s just a flesh wound. [laughs] No, this is very bad. She has always prided herself on being invincible, and she’s not, and this is definitely a major realization for her, that “holy crap. I am not the super-person that I deemed myself to be.”
I kind of think it’s funny, because sometimes I think the writers mirror a lot of our characters from our real personas. I am very much “yeah, I’m fine, like, whatever… you want me to do that? It’s okay, look, I’m totally fine with that!” And I’m really kind of sporty and everything. I twisted my ankle twice — no, three times now! Three times while shooting the show. And every time, the writers are always like “Lindsey. Take care of yourself!” and I’m like “yeah, I’m great, I’m going skiing or rock climbing! Oops, twisted my ankle again.” And it would drive me nuts. I’d always be like “oh my gosh. What’s wrong with my body? Why isn’t it working? Why can’t I do what I want to do?” It’s such a humbling experience, being like “my body is not bionic. I am a real person.” I’m just like “whoosh.” So for Raven, she’s definitely discovering that herself; that she is not made out of steel. She’s not a machine. And that’s a big realization for her, and very scary.
On that note, this whole season she’s done things like planting the bomb on the bridge, or crawling under the ship where it could be very dangerous… do you have any insight as to why she felt so invincible in the first place?
I think she’s pretty fearless, but I think it’s because everything that she’s had in her life, she’s kind of just had to do it. It’s almost like when you’re at a cliff – you could just stare at it, and be frightened of it for hours, and debate on whether or not to go – and Raven just jumps off. Always. The bomb thing, that was just a decision. That wasn’t even like “I’m gonna die.” She wasn’t planning on dying. She actually had a very good plan, and that was to set it all up, go back 200 feet, and make the shot herself. It’s just that she got sick along the way, and she was delirious, and that’s why she tried to make the shot that would eventually kill her, because she wasn’t thinking straight, and was just literally going unconscious. That wasn’t necessarily like a fearless thing; that was just “my brain doesn’t work anymore!”
What was your reaction when you heard that the show was picked up for Season 2, and is there any chance you might become a series regular next year?
I was so excited, but also not surprised. Maybe that’s cocky, but whatever. You’ve seen the show. I knew what we were making, and it blows my mind. I was just like “no way this will not get picked up again, and if it doesn’t, then there’s something wrong with the world.” I was so happy, just for everybody. And as far as Season 2, just watch, because you never know.
