Season 2 of Rogue premieres tonight (May 28) at 8PM ET/PT on DIRECTV, and the second year sees Grace Travis attempting to navigate a new life, but of course, things don’t stay quiet for long.
Grace is now separated from her husband, and she is still committed to providing a stable home for her daughter, Evie. To do so, Grace takes on a new job — which, of course, adds new levels of drama when things start going wrong.
Season 2 adds new cast members including Cole Hauser as Ethan Kelly, Andrea Roth as Leni, Aleksa Palladino as Sarah, Alec Newman as Ray, and Clare Higgins as Grace’s mother, Vivian.
We spoke with Thandie Newton on the Vancouver sets of Rogue for a little bit of talk about the arc that pushes Grace into Season 2. How are things different for her character as the show goes into its second year?
“It can’t be the same, but it absolutely, authentically leads on from [Season 1], in that she went with her instinct, even though everyone was telling her not to do, but really, she was about to go to prison at the end. She was right. She was right all along. She was right with that intuition. So with that sense of entitlement, imagine what kind of cop she could be. But because of everything that happened with her family, she chooses now to become a handler. It’s not a desk job, too much, but you get the difference,” Newton explains, before telling us what brings Grace back into big drama.
“She’s handling this young woman, Sarah, who’s an undercover cop, and Sarah goes missing,” she reveals. “And so, there is a degree of guilt there with Grace, that she wasn’t doing her job in a way that protected this young woman, but when she goes undercover to look for her, it’s legitimate. It’s not her going rogue, with everyone running after her and enemies from all sides… Grace isn’t looking over her shoulder any more,” though, this time undercover will bring a new identity. “All of that energy is going into creating this character, very different to the Jackie Hayes character. This time, there’s massive separation between Grace and the character that she plays undercover, which, for me, is so much fun,” Newton says.
In Grace’s home life, Clare Higgins has joined the Rogue cast as Vivian, Grace’s estranged mother. Newton describes Vivian as “a real Blanche DuBois character who just explodes into their lives and is just as much trouble as the espionage that Grace is undercover exploring.”
“It’s true that in life, there’s more drama in every day situations, family stuff, than any kind of intriguing, crazy cop plot line you could imagine, and the real power comes from the bedrock you create in your home environment,” Newton explains. “There’s a lot of crazy stuff that has gone on in Grace’s life, and it’s fantastic to play that stuff.”
