The Goldbergs (returning tonight at 8PM on ABC) is an interesting series because the lead characters are based on the childhood experiences of creator Adam F. Goldberg, and as such, many of the characters aside from Erica have real-life counterparts.

One of the most memorable characters to come from the series is Adam’s [s]mother Beverly as played by Wendi McLendon-Covey. On a recent visit to the Goldbergs set we asked the actress if meeting the real-life Beverly Goldberg has affected how she plays the TV character.

“It hasn’t affected it yet, but if we go so long that we actually see these kids get married and have children, that’s when it will affect it,” McLendon-Covey said before explaining exactly why. “I think she’s probably the best Grandma in the world. I think she’s probably the one who is always slipping money into the kids’ pockets, and candy, and then gives them back all hyper and sugared up to their parents. So I think that’s when that will happen,” she continued, adding that seeing how Beverly interacts with her daughters-in-law would be another thing that we would see.

On tonight’s Goldbergs the new season kicks off with a tribute to the film Weird Science. You can see photos from that season premiere here.
