Wednesday isn't the only night that someone can find a Green Arrow on The CW this Fall.
While a lot of attention has been placed on the lead of Emily Owens, M.D. (that would be Mamie Gummer, who is quite good), legions of Smallville and Passions fans are probably even more excited that the former Fox Crane turned Green Arrow, Justin Hartley, is part of the ensemble.
We spoke with Justin on the Vancouver set of Emily Owens, a hospital set so clean, fancy, and new that if I ever did have to go to a hospital, that would be where I'd want to be. All of the high school level drama between some of the staff, though, would make me wonder about the care, but hey... they're all sexy, right?
Justin plays Will, the object of Emily's adult-adolescent crush. Basically, if Jordan Catalano was a doctor, he would be Will. Emily's rival from her past, Cassandra, also has designs on Will -- but Justin assures us that is not what Emily Owens, M.D. is centered around. "It's definitely part of it, but that's not what the show is about. It's not, you know, two girls fighting over a guy," he says.
"It's great," Justin says of his new gig. "You have the procedural element, and you also have the 'soapy element.' Which I don't know if you all know this or not, but I used to be on a show called Passions, which was very, very good to me, and I talk to some of those people, still. But yeah. We have the best of both worlds, I think. We have the drama, intense drama. Heartbreak. Heartache. And then we have comedy, light-hearted comedy, which is great, because with Smallville, I loved doing the drama, but I was looking for some comedy to do. Something funny, but I didn't want to get away from the drama, because I like the drama, and this is just sort of perfect for me."
"I come to work, and I am around beautiful people. Wonderful, inside and out. Professionals, they know what they're doing. I put on scrubs, which are essentially pajamas, and you know, people talk to you about how comfortable your shoes are. I'm like 'what are you, kidding me? I'm fine. Are you serious? I'm in pajamas'," he says. Does that imply that the scrubs are more comfortable than the green leather he wore on Smallville?
"A bit more comfortable, yeah, but, you know, it got to the point where Oliver wasn't wearing the green - he wasn't wearing anything for about a year, so between nude and cotton, I would say it's a toss up," he laughs.
Emily Owens, M.D. premieres tonight at 9PM on The CW, following Hart Of Dixie.
